A new year is here (whether we are ready for it or not) and so are new trends in decorative lighting. Just last week, our industry had a big trade show at the Dallas Market Center in Dallas, Texas. This is where the highly anticipated, newest collections are shown and we get to see what our favorite brands have designed for the latest in lighting fixtures.

Several popular style trends from last year have carried over into 2015 - Industrial, Restoration, Modern Rustic, Geometric, and LED lighting. We will see lighting brands offering more collections with these details; some full on and some with just slight nods to the styles. We have quite a few collections from the lighting industry leaders: Kichler, Feiss, ELK Lighting, and Crystorama are worth noting.

In new releases for 2015 from Kichler, we have the Rumer chandelier and Pendalette (a clever name for a fixture that can be hung as a pendant, shortened to a semi-flush, or even mounted as a wall sconce). This 2-piece collection showcases several design details that are big this year so far. The industrial pipe metal frame is finished in a warm Natural Brass paired with the two-tone coloring of a black cord, along with uncovered sockets which look best with an antique style light bulb.

This chandelier and pendant also feature another design trend continuing into this year, pull-down retractable lighting. The cord can be gathered up and clamped together to raise the bulbs or it can be completely untethered. The adjustability factor of this collection with the 3 in 1 light fixture and the chandelier is a breathe of fresh air for lighting to come. We hope the multi-functional usability of lighting will continue and become the standard.

The Modern Rustic style is another one that has carried over from 2014. Painted wood in varying degrees of weathering paired with distressed iron or hammered metals, were shown in several new releases from Quoizel and Maxim Lighting. The Chamber collection from Quoizel shows how this lighting trend can be whimsical but cutting edge. The Maxim Bodega Bay pendants and orb chandeliers give us a simple silhouette yet the wood and metal still has the old world feel you expect from rustic design.

Heavy metals and distressed wood not your thing? Lighting that is airy and light, with no fuss or embellishments have been a big hit too. The Kichler Holbrook and the Feiss Baskin and Alcott pendants are a great example with their clear glass shades; these pendants bring warmth and sparkle, while complementing all types of decor. Clear glass is not the only way lighting can be kept clean. Sometimes just taking inspiration from the past will do, like in the mid-century modern Danika collection from Kichler (Image at top of post). Featuring a white gloss finish with honey wood accents, and simple silhouette, makes it a fresh classic. The chandelier is also adjustable with a twist.

Geometric patterns and shapes have also been gaining in popularity for decorative lighting fixtures. Offerings from Crystorama, Sea Gull and Maxim Lighting showcase how a basic thing as a shape, can be so inspiring for innovative lighting design. The Harambee collection from Sea Gull Lighting utilizes triangles to create its own pattern and gives this series of wall sconces and pendant lights an architectural detail. The handcrafted Maxim Twisp collection use twisted bands of aluminum to create pendants in varying diameters and height, making artisan sculptures of light. Crystorama overlays different sized rectangles to create the forms for their Lattice collection. The raw steel used for the frames gives a rustic edge to an otherwise contemporary pattern, making it the perfect blend of modern and rustic.

Another big trend continuing this year is LED lighting. LED has become easier to use in everyday lighting and not just for the ultra contemporary light fixtures. Feiss Lighting, Kichler Lighting, and ELK Lighting Group are putting more integrated LEDs in their lines, making it easier than ever to have long lasting, energy efficient lighting in your home. These Lindsey pendants from ELK Lighting are a great way to incorporate LED and another popular trend, wood and metal, into your decor.

Feiss Lighting had released last year the Audrie collection with much success and this year, they have stepped up their LED offering. The new Khloe collection of orb cage pendants are a clean and simple way to use LED lighting in your home. Offered in four sizes and two finishes, Oil Rubbed Bronze with Hammered Metal Inlay or Satin Nickel with Crystal Inlay, you will be able to find the right one for you. The LED’s shine inward from half the arms while the inlay details adorn the opposite arms to catch the light. The LEDs have a 2700K color temperature which makes this LED pendant light an easy choice to swap out that outdated, incandescent foyer light.

All in all, it was a good show at Dallas this year. We have nothing but high hopes for 2015, and with these new releases, we know it will be a bright one.
